The nights are inky dark now earlier and earlier. Last night a drizzle of rain fell along with the leaves from the oak trees in the yard. The yellow glow from the security light shines through the remaining red-orange leaves of the crepe myrtle, a splash of color against the dark sky. In the bushes my small dog rambles around trying to flush a rabbit he can’t catch. Leaves crunch under my boots and the hunting dogs bark from their kennels for no reason other than the shadows in the woods moved in a way they don’t approve. The neighborhood is quiet this late at night but still, there is a hum in the air. From across town, you can hear the freight train rattling and clacking down the tracks, the engine horn blows as it comes into the city limits and continues through town. The light continues to shine through the leaves overhead. A drizzle of color to compliment the drizzle of rain.
